I didn’t look down too often, 2022-23
2 channel video installation, 6 min
Video installation, improvised performance and publication. An exploration of the times I grew up in with sound created out of movement and muscle tension.
Through collecting images from the national Polish archive I look for symbols of what culturally has been and is perceived as how a ‘real man’ is expected to act like. There are rules we were taught as kids and we agree with them just because we don’t know any other way.
Is the way my body speaking actually mine or am I moving as I have been taught to do? How do we just talk with our bodies? Is this an ongoing conversation? When do we even call it a conversation? Playing with a finger ring may be a result of nervousness, looking down means I am shy, but after I notice it I still try to fit in the old norms. I was always asking myself is there really only one way to be a man? Sometimes I get curious what my current role is. I quickly scan my body to understand what I am presenting in that moment.
